Arrived safe & sound

We heard from Ben this evening after returning from dinner. He briefed us on his arrival and the first couple of days in Lüneburg.

Together with nine other students, he is going to live in a Wohngemeinschaft, or living community, about 3.7 km from campus. Each person has his or her own room, with two shared bathrooms and two shared kitchens. The apartment is east of the train station and across the river from downtown Lüneburg.

Ben walked from campus this evening and said it took him about 50 minutes, but he attributed part of that to the fact he walked through unfamiliar surroundings. He said the city itself is similar to what he expected: Very old, immaculately clean, picturesque. Today he went on an orientation tour that included a couple of hours downtown.

His room is a decent size, he said, similar to the one he had in Ada, with a huge window. In addition to his bed (complete with a pillow, blanket and sheets), he's got a table and chair, a desk, a couch, a clothing rack (sounds similar to an open closet) and open shelves. The apartment house has wireless Internet access, so Ben was able to get online tonight with the help of Uta, one of his housemates. There are laundry facilities in the basement.

It was wonderful to hear from him. He sounded extremely happy and well, which of course is a great relief for Kathie and me. We all promised to stay in touch with one another as he explores his new environs and learns all about life in Germany.
